The Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) has begun operational trials of its first Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime reconnaissance aircraft from Fiji. The trials, which started in early April, are designed to prepare crews for broad-range maritime surveillance missions across the South Pacific.

A New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) spokesperson confirmed that aircraft NZ4801 and its crew are working to ensure aircrew and support personnel are proficient in tasks such as resource protection and search-and-rescue operations. However, the NZDF declined to provide further details about specific flight activities during this testing phase.

The RNZAF’s second P-8A Poseidon arrived in New Zealand on 21 March, according to Defence Minister Andrew Little, though it remains unclear whether this aircraft has also been deployed to Fiji. The NZDF noted that as the fleet builds toward its planned capability release in mid-2023, the aircraft will continue to operate actively throughout the South Pacific region.

Air Commodore Shaun Sexton, Air Component commander, emphasized on 5 April that “operational trials and development are an important part of the introduction into service of a modern aircraft like the Poseidon.”
