Netherlands Seeks Long-Range JASSM-ER Missiles for F-35 Fleet
The Netherlands Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on 3 April that it has formally requested the purchase of the Lockheed Martin Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile-Extended Range (JASSM-ER) system to equip its F-35 fighter aircraft.
This procurement aims to strengthen the Netherlands’ long-range precision strike capabilities. If approved by the U.S. government, the acquisition would fulfill a requirement outlined in the 2022 Defence Memorandum for advanced long-range weapons.
A MoD spokesperson declined to specify the exact number of missiles requested but noted that the quantity would be similar to those acquired by other European nations. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2027, pending approval.
The JASSM is a precision-guided, autonomous standoff weapon designed to engage high-value and heavily defended targets. It is available in two primary variants:
JASSM Baseline (AGM-158A): with an estimated range of 370 km.
JASSM-ER (Extended Range): with a range approaching 1,000 km, enabled by a Williams International F107-WR-105 turbofan engine and additional fuel capacity.
Within the JASSM-ER family, several versions exist:
AGM-158B: the initial extended-range model.
AGM-158B-2: featuring a redesigned wing assembly, electronic fuse, upgraded GPS receiver, improved Missile Control Unit (MCU), and enhanced software.
AGM-158B-3: incorporating all B-2 upgrades plus a Military-Code (M-code) GPS receiver for improved security and resistance to jamming.
AGM-158D: the latest iteration with further refinements.
By pursuing the JASSM-ER, the Netherlands seeks to ensure its F-35 fleet can deliver credible long-range strike options in line with NATO and European defense standards.
