Congressional Deadlock Threatens Military Modernization<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Persistent political divisions in the U.S. Congress are creating obstacles for the Pentagon\u2019s long-term spending plans. Defense officials have warned that without a full-year budget, critical military programs\u2014including hypersonic weapons and advanced unmanned aerial vehicles\u2014could face significant delays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Senior leaders fear such setbacks may weaken America\u2019s position in its strategic competition with China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Urgent Calls from the Air Force<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe cannot waste time,\u201d<\/em> emphasized Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall during a recent panel discussion. He highlighted the Air Force\u2019s focus on developing Collaborative Combat Aircraft and other advanced systems designed to outperform the People\u2019s Liberation Army.
Kendall noted that the concept has already lost two years since its inception, cautioning that without a fiscal year 2024 budget, \u201cwe may lose another year.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

China\u2019s Accelerated Spending<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Heidi Shyu echoed these concerns, pointing out that \u201cChina spends an enormous amount of money\u201d on testing and development, while the U.S. faces a budgetary shortfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
