{"id":3178,"date":"2019-05-17T23:13:00","date_gmt":"2019-05-17T20:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.xairforces.com\/?p=3178"},"modified":"2023-08-28T23:13:48","modified_gmt":"2023-08-28T20:13:48","slug":"greek-navy-takes-initial-reactivated-lockheed-hai-p-3b-orion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.xairforces.com\/?p=3178","title":{"rendered":"Greek Navy Takes Initial Reactivated Lockheed HAI P-3B Orion"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Greece has received its first revived Lockheed Martin P-3B Orion as part of a \u201crebirth\u201d of the country\u2019s maritime patrol capability as it brings stored aircraft back to service.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.xairforces.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/2019-May-17-Greek-Navy-Takes-Initial-Reactivated-Lockheed-HAI-P-3B-Orion-1200.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.xairforces.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/2019-May-17-Greek-Navy-Takes-Initial-Reactivated-Lockheed-HAI-P-3B-Orion-1200-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Greek Navy Lockheed HAI P-3B Orion\" class=\"wp-image-3179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.xairforces.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/2019-May-17-Greek-Navy-Takes-Initial-Reactivated-Lockheed-HAI-P-3B-Orion-1200-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.xairforces.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/2019-May-17-Greek-Navy-Takes-Initial-Reactivated-Lockheed-HAI-P-3B-Orion-1200-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.xairforces.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/2019-May-17-Greek-Navy-Takes-Initial-Reactivated-Lockheed-HAI-P-3B-Orion-1200-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.xairforces.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/2019-May-17-Greek-Navy-Takes-Initial-Reactivated-Lockheed-HAI-P-3B-Orion-1200.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Greek Navy Lockheed HAI P-3B Orion (Photo by Hellenic Aerospace Industries)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Following work performed by Hellenic Aerospace Industries (HAI), the initial aircraft, described as an \u201cinterim\u201d step, was presented to Greece\u2019s navy on 17 May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking at the event, Geoffrey Pyatt, the US ambassador to the Mediterranean country, said that it was \u201can honour\u201d to \u201ccelebrate the rebirth of the Hellenic Navy\u2019s maritime patrol capability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An additional four aircraft are scheduled to be modernised under the effort, which includes a mid-life upgrade to extend the service life of the turboprop type by 15,000h and the installation of new mission equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Greek defence minister Evangelos Apostolakis says receipt of the initial example is \u201cthe first step in a major program to modernise these P-3B aircraft\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Athens purchased six ex-US Navy P-3Bs in 1996, parking them in 2009 amid financial cutbacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HAI is carrying out the modifications as part of an overall $142 million contract awarded in February 2016 to Lockheed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Separately, 70 Bell OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopters, formerly operated by the US Army, arrived in Greece earlier this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Athens has acquired the aircraft via the USA\u2019s Excess Defense Articles programme.
