The US Department of\u00a0Defense announced in\u00a0a press release on\u00a0Thursday that Electric Boat will produce missile tubes in\u00a0support of\u00a0the next generation Columbia-Class submarines as\u00a0part of\u00a0the United States-United Kingdom common missile compartment program.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

“Electric Boat Corp., Groton, Connecticut, is being awarded a $ $203,073,701 to\u00a0a previously awarded contract for\u00a0the manufacturing of\u00a0missile tubes in\u00a0support of\u00a0the Columbia Class Submarine [program],” the release stated on\u00a0Thursday. “This is a joint US-UK common missile compartment program and this modification includes foreign military sales to\u00a0the United Kingdom.”<\/p>\n

The common missile compartment was developed by\u00a0both countries and will be used on\u00a0the next-generation Columbia and Dreadnought strategic nuclear submarines, according to\u00a0the Defense Department.<\/p>\n

The tubes will house the Trident II D-5 nuclear missile. Built by\u00a0Lockheed Martin, the missile has made more than\u00a0160 successful test flights.<\/p>\n
