NATO confirmed on Wednesday its planes had tracked three Russian aircraft over the Baltic Sea as they had not not responded to air traffic controllers or provided information about themselves.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier in\u00a0the day, a NATO F-16 fighter attempted to\u00a0get close to\u00a0Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu’s plane en route to\u00a0the westernmost Russian city of\u00a0Kaliningrad over\u00a0neutral Baltic waters but was chased away by\u00a0a Russian jet<\/a>. Russia’s Sukhoi Su-27 fighter, one of\u00a0the aircraft escorting Shoigu’s plane, then displayed its weapons, prompting the F-16 to\u00a0retreat.<\/p>\n

“NATO can confirm that three Russian aircraft, including two fighters, were tracked over\u00a0the Baltic Sea earlier today (21 June 2017). As the aircraft did not identify themselves or respond to\u00a0air traffic control, NATO fighter jets scrambled to\u00a0identify them, according to\u00a0standard procedures. NATO has no information as\u00a0to who was on\u00a0board. We assess the Russian pilots\u2019 behaviour as\u00a0safe and professional,” a representative of\u00a0the alliance told reporters.<\/p>\n

The NATO official stressed that the pilot\u2019s actions were routine.<\/p>\n

“Generally, when NATO aircraft intercept a plane they identify it visually, maintaining a safe distance at\u00a0all times. Once complete, NATO jets break away \u2026 All our pilots behave in\u00a0a safe and responsible way,” the NATO representative said.<\/p>\n

In Kaliningrad, Shoigu held a ministerial board meeting devoted to\u00a0issues of\u00a0ensuring security in\u00a0the Western strategic direction.<\/p>\n

On the way from\u00a0Kaliningrad, the Russian fleet was joined by\u00a0Su-34 fighter-bombers. Several NATO aircraft escorted Shoigu\u2019s plane at\u00a0a considerable distance, not trying to\u00a0get close, according to\u00a0a Sputnik correspondent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
