(Photo by Getty ?mages)<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p>A government source told a South Korean news agency the Phoenix made an \u201cemergency sortie\u201d over the East Sea with the mission of detecting nuclear samples to identify if a nuclear explosion had taken place.<\/p>\n<p>The plane had previously been deployed to Europe in February where it landed at a UK air base in Surrey before travelling over Norway.<\/p>\n<p>The US military said the aircraft normally\u00a0 operates on a pre-planned rotation that is scheduled well in advance.<\/p>\n<p>The deployment comes amid a major training exercise held between South Korean and US forces in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Operation Max Thunder will see hundreds of troops undertake war games involving aircraft carriers, fighter jets and military drills over 11 days.<\/p>\n<p>The US has stressed such exercises are routine, however it comes after Vice President Mike Pence said the \u201csword stands ready\u201d if diplomacy fails.<\/p>\n<p>North Korean has also threatened the country is <em>\u201cready to react\u201d and accused the US of creating a situation in which \u201ca thermonuclear war may break out at any moment.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>US and Korean forces are already taking part in two regional exercises, Foal Eagle and Key Resolve, which involve up to 17,000 troops including the famed special forces team that killed Osama bin Laden in May 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile Russia has also reportedly been moving troops, helicopters and vehicles to the North Korean border.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1180\" style=\"width: 970px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.xairforces.com\/?attachment_id=1180\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1180\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1180\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.xairforces.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/USAF-WC-135-Nuclear-sniffer-planes-20-04-2017.jpg\" alt=\"USAF WC-135 Nuclear sniffer planes \" width=\"960\" height=\"622\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.xairforces.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/USAF-WC-135-Nuclear-sniffer-planes-20-04-2017.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.xairforces.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/USAF-WC-135-Nuclear-sniffer-planes-20-04-2017-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.xairforces.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/USAF-WC-135-Nuclear-sniffer-planes-20-04-2017-768x498.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1180\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The U.S. Air Force\u2019s WC-135 Nuclear sniffer planes are used to detect and identify radioactive debris (Photo by Wikipedia)<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>What does the WC-135 Constant Phoenix do?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The WC-135, known as the <strong><em>\u201csniffer\u201d<\/em><\/strong> or<em><strong> \u201cweather bird\u201d<\/strong><\/em> by its crews, can carry up to 33 personnel.
